Andrew S. McClure was born May 3, 1829 in Darwin, Indiana. He died March 21, 1898 in Eugene, Oregon. In 1845 Elijah Bristow left Illinois, crossed the Plains to California, and wintered at Sutter's Fort. In the spring of 1846, along with Eugene F. Skinner, Felix Scott, and William Dodson, he traveled to the upper Willamette Valley, settling about 20 miles southeast of present-day Eugene. He called the area "Pleasant Hill."
